Pool Fill Time
Estimate how long it will take to fill your pool.
Know Your Water Source
Source water varies wildly. Well water often contains high iron or copper that will stain the pool instantly when chlorine is added. City water may have high pH or high Calcium Hardness. Always test your fill water before it enters the pool.
Filtering Fill Water
We highly recommend using a "hose-end pre-filter" (specifically a metal trap) when filling. It attaches to your garden hose and removes sediment and stain-causing metals, saving you hundreds in chemicals later.

Measuring Flow Rate
Garden hoses vary from 5 GPM (long, thin hose) to 12+ GPM (short, wide hose). To get an accurate estimate, time how long it takes to fill a 5-gallon bucket. Formula: 300 / Seconds = GPM.
Evaporation & Refilling
An average pool loses 1/4 inch of water per day to evaporation (more in summer). Weekly top-offs are normal. If you are losing more than that, use our Leak Detection calculator to check for issues.

Post-Fill Balancing
Fresh water upsets pool balance. It usually lowers your CYA and Salt levels (via dilution). It can also drastically change pH and Alkalinity depending on the source. Test and balance immediately after filling.
Well Water Warning
If filling continuously from a private well, be careful not to run it dry or overheat the well pump. It is often safer to fill in 2-3 hour bursts, allowing the well recovery time in between.
