Pool Filter Sizing
Determine the minimum filter size needed for your pump's flow rate.
Target Range
Choosing the Right Filter
Selecting the right filter requires balancing user load, pump flow rate, and maintenance preferences. A filter that is too small will strain your pump and fail to keep the water clear, while an appropriately sized filter reduces maintenance and improves water quality.
Always Oversize
A larger filter has more surface area to trap debris, meaning you can go much longer between cleanings. It also reduces back pressure on your pump, extending its lifespan and lowering energy costs.

Sand Pool Filter
24" In-Ground Sand Filter.
High-Rate Sand
Sand filters are the most common and easiest to maintain. They trap particles down to 25-100 microns using #20 silica sand. Cleaning is simple: just 'backwash' the system to reverse the flow and flush out debris. Sand typically lasts 5-7 years.
Cartridge Filtration
Cartridge filters offer a great middle ground, filtering down to 10-15 microns. They don't require backwashing, which saves water. Simply remove the cartridges and spray them off with a garden hose when pressure rises.

Cartridge Pool Filter
Diatomaceous Earth (DE)
DE filters provide the ultimate water clarity, trapping particles as small as 1-3 microns. They use a fine powder to coat internal grids, filtering out microscopic dust and algae that other filters miss. Perfect for pool owners who demand crystal-clear water.
Safety & Clarity
Undersized filters lead to cloudy water, which is a major safety hazard. If you cannot see the main drain at the bottom of the pool at all times, the pool is not safe for swimming. Proper filtration ensures visibility.
