Underground Leaks
90% of leaks are not in the shell, but in the plumbing. The most common failure points are the glue joints at the skimmer throat or return jets, where ground movement stresses the PVC pipes.
The 1/4″ Rule
It's normal to lose water. However, if you are losing more than 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) per day in addition to normal evaporation, you almost certainly have a leak that warrants professional detection.
Dye Testing
You can confirm a structural crack yourself. With the pump OFF and water still, squirt a small amount of pool dye (or food coloring) near the crack. If the dye gets sucked into the crack, you've found your leak.
