What is Flow Rate?
Flow Rate is the volume of water your pump moves through the system, measured in Gallons Per Minute (GPM). It determines how quickly your pool water is filtered, heated, and sanitized.
Importance of Circulation
Proper circulation prevents "dead spots" where algae can grow. It ensures that chlorine and heat are evenly distributed to every corner of the pool, not just near the returns.

Minimum Flow Requirements
Equipment like heaters, salt chlorinators, and heat pumps have unsafe low-flow limits. If flow drops below this (e.g., 20-30 GPM), internal flow switches will trip, shutting off the equipment to prevent overheating or explosion risks.
Check Your Filter Rating
Every filter has a "Maximum Design Flow Rate." Pushing more water than this limit creates dangerous internal pressure, reduces filtration quality, and can even crack the filter tank housing.

Consequences of Low Flow
Low flow leads to stagnant water. Debris won't be pushed to the skimmers, surface film will build up, and chemicals will sink to the bottom, bleaching the liner or etching the plaster.
Risks of High Flow
Excessive flow is dangerous. It wastes huge amounts of electricity, can damage plumbing joints, and creates entrapment hazards at the main drain suction points required by the VGB Act.
