Why Volume Matters

Knowing your pool's volume is the foundation of all chemical dosing. If you underestimate, your chemicals won't be effective. If you overestimate, you risk damaging equipment and skin irritation from overdosing.

Calculations

Rectangular: Length x Width x Avg Depth x 7.48.
Every cubic foot of water contains 7.48 gallons. Calculating the cubic footage first is the most reliable method.

The 7.48 Constant

The number 7.48 is the conversion factor from cubic feet to gallons. If you are calculating in meters, 1 cubic meter = 264.17 gallons (or 1000 liters).

Testing Frequency

Once you know your volume, write it down! You will need this number every single time you use a pool calculator like this one. It never changes unless you rennovate the pool.

Round Pools

Round: Radius x Radius x 3.14 x Avg Depth x 7.48.
Be careful to use Radius (half width) and not Diameter! Using Diameter will quadruple your result incorrectly.

Complex Shapes

For kidney or freeform pools, divide the shape into smaller rectangles and circles (A + B). Calculate the volume of each section separately and add them together for the total.
